What to Expect During a Rainy Day at the Cottage
Front row seats to a gorgeous show and soundtrack
Rain is part of the deal in coastal Maine, even in summer. The skies can turn gray, the fog rolls in like it owns the place, and suddenly you’re swapping your sandals for socks and grabbing a book instead of your beach bag.
But here’s the thing — rainy days at Camelot? If we’re being totally honest, they’re kind of the best. (Summer thunderstorms have a certain cinematic romantic vibe)
Here’s what to expect when the weather turns, and how to turn a wet day into a cozy highlight of your trip.
First, the basics
The cottage has reliable WiFi, plenty of puzzles and games, and a covered screened porch that’s surprisingly magical when there’s a steady drizzle coming down. Open a window, pull on a sweater, and lean into it.
Note: The shower has low clearance, so if you're hoping to warm up with a steamy post-storm rinse and you’re tall, maybe stick with a hot cup of tea or chocolate instead.
How to Spend a Rainy Day Without Leaving the Cottage
Sleep in. Rain on the roof is nature’s white noise machine.
Make something warm. Soup, grilled cheese, a second pot of coffee — whatever says “comfort” to you.
Read the book you brought. Or grab one from the shelf. There’s usually something worth flipping through.
Start a board game. An alternate option includes choosing from a myriad of puzzles.
Watch the weather. Seriously — fog rolling across the ocean and sky is mesmerizing.
You might even find the rain makes you slow down in a way sunshine never could.
Still Want to Get Out? Here Are a Few Rain-Friendly Options
Visit the Boothbay Railway Village Museum
A charming stop with indoor exhibits, vintage trains, and model railroad displays. Great for both kids and adults who love a little nostalgia.Tour the Maine State Aquarium (in nearby West Boothbay Harbor)
Small but kid-friendly, with touch tanks and local sea life.Take a foggy drive down Ocean Point Road
The dramatic shoreline is beautiful in moody weather — and you’ll have it mostly to yourself. Windows down optional but encouraged (the smell of damp Maine shoreline can’t be bottled, but you’ll wish it was).Hit Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop
A solid local bookstore with plenty of Maine-themed reads, puzzles, and rainy day activities tucked in the shelves. We make a point to stop in here almost every trip. Plus, there’s a cozy café just down the street (Red Cup Coffeehouse).
You don’t come to Southport Island expecting perfect weather. You come for the feel of the place—and rain is part of that. Some of our favorite memories at Camelot were made on gray days with nowhere to be and nothing to prove.
If the weather shifts during your stay, you’re not missing out. You’re just getting a different version of the magic.
