What Makes Our Southport Island Cottage Different (and Why That Matters)

Not Your Average Rental (And We’re Okay With That)

When you’re looking for a place to stay in Midcoast Maine, you’ll find plenty of charming options. Inns with ivy-covered walls. Sleek condos. Coastal cabins. And a scrollable sea of short-term rentals that can start to blur together after a while.

So what makes Camelot different?

It’s not just the aspen and birch trees or the deck (though we love both). It’s the feeling here — the one that settles in after your first deep breath of salty air, when your shoulders drop and your brain finally stops pinging.

Here’s what sets our cottage apart, and why that difference might just be what you’re looking for.

1. This Isn’t a Vacation Property. It’s a Family Cottage.

Katie (current 2nd generation co-owner, aged 13 when her parents purchased Camelot) and her daughter Meg during the 2024 season

Camelot has been in our family for over 50 years. Four generations have spent their summers here — reading on the deck, watching for fireflies, tracking sand into the kitchen. You’ll see echoes of that throughout the space: a shelf full of well-loved books, a wall of postcards family members have written over the years, height markings on the doorjamb, a name for the twin bedroom (“Mussel Inn”) that’s stuck for decades.

When we say “make yourself at home,” we mean it.

2. It’s Simple, On Purpose

There’s no hot tub. No big screen. No marble countertops. But you’ll find soft lighting, real wood paneling, and windows that open wide to the breeze.

It’s not flashy — but it’s the kind of place where you remember what it feels like to slow down and forget what day it is. Where you don’t have to get dressed for breakfast, and nobody minds if dinner is just cheese and crackers and a second glass of wine (ask us how we know).

3. The Quirks Are Part of the Charm

The shower’s a little short. The plumbing is actually vintage (so please be gentle). There’s no dishwasher — but there is a view out the kitchen window while you rinse, and something about that makes even chores feel nostalgic.

These quirks aren’t flaws. They’re features of a place that’s been around long enough to know what matters — and what doesn’t.

4. You Don’t Just Stay Here. You Step Into Future Memories.

Camelot was named after our parents’ favorite movie — one that promised a place of peace, simplicity, and shared joy. That spirit still lingers in the floorboards and the fog. You’ll feel it when you sit on the deck with your first cup of coffee, or when you realize no one’s checked their phone in hours.

It’s not curated. It’s not staged. It’s just real. The kind of place you’ll remember long after you’ve left.

5. We Want You to Love It As Much As We Do

That’s why we’re transparent about the quirks, clear about the vibe, and happy to answer questions before you book. We don’t want every guest — we want the right ones. The ones who get what this place is about.

So if you’re craving a perfectly quiet, slightly creaky, pine-scented kind of summer stay… we think you’ll feel right at home here.
